All-Terrain Vehicle Helmets
NZS 8600:2002

General Principles
This helmet has been designed for off-road use by ATV users at low speeds (generally under 30 kph). Although a helmet will not guarantee safety from head injury in all cases, injury may be reduced through the appropriate use of ATV’s and wearing a helmet in many cases. As head injuries may occur in any setting where an ATV is in use the helmet should be worn at all times when riding ATV’s.

Methods of Protection
A protective helmet protects against impact by absorbing energy through –
(a) Deformation of the shell,
(b) Crushing of the protective padding if provided,
(c) Stretching of the harness in some cases.
The residual force of the impact is spread over the surface of the head, thus lessening the chance of injury.

Care and Safe Practices
(a) No helmet can protect the wearer against all possible impacts.
(b) The helmet is designed to be retained by a strap under the lower jaw.
(c) To be effective, a helmet must fit and work correctly. To check for correct fit, place helmet on head and make any adjustments indicated. Securely fasten retention system. Grasp the helmet and try to rotate it to the front and rear. A correctly fitted helmet should be comfortable and should not move forward to obscure vision or rearward to expose the forehead. It is recommended that this is represented graphically.
(d) No attachments or modifications should be made to the helmet except those recommended by the helmet manufacturer.
(e) The helmet is designed to absorb shock by partial destruction of the shell and liner. The damage may not be visible. Therefore, if subjected to a severe blow, the helmet should be destroyed and replace even if it appears undamaged.
(f) The helmet may be damaged and rendered ineffective by petroleum and petroleum products, cleaning agents, plaints, adhesives and the like, damage being visible to the user.
(g) A helmet has a limited lifespan in use and should be replaced when it exceeds its designed lifespan and/or shows obvious signs of wear, for example, if the surface of the helmet becomes chalky, faded or cracked.
(h) Clean helmet with warm water soap or non-petroleum solvents.
